FOREVER DON ALEJANDRO ROBAINA

2010年4月17日、生きる伝説と呼ばれたDON ALEJANDRO ROBAINAの存在が本当に伝説となってしまった。享年91歳、数年前に彼を訪ねた時にはまだまだ元気そうで100歳までも生きてくれそうな様子だった。彼を失った事はキューバの葉巻界にとってはもちろんの事、全世界の葉巻界にとっても大きな痛手となる事は間違いない。独自のたばこ理論を持ち、栽培方法を生み出し、ロバイナ農園で生産していたたばこ葉の80％は輸出葉巻のラッパーに使われていた。1997年より世に送り出された彼を冠した「VEGAS ROBAINA」という葉巻ブランドのみならず。キューバの葉巻すべてに与える影響というものが顕著に現れてくる事は明言出来る。ドン・アレハンドロはキューバのタバコ葉の産地として世界にその名を知られるブエルタ・アバホ地域で最も優れたタバコ栽培家として世界中の葉巻愛好家に名を知られていた。 毎年、ドン・アレハンドロの収穫したタバコ葉の80%はキューバ葉巻のラッパー用タバコ葉としての使用されている事が彼を著名にした。ちなみに他の農園では収穫の約35%だけが使われていた。 さらに1997年に、Habanos SAは、彼の有名な農地の名がついている葉巻のブランド・ラインを始めることによって、彼を讃えた。 ハバナの元H.アップマンFactoryで作られたVEGAS ROBAINAは、当然のように葉巻愛好家に素晴らしい葉巻として認められた。1845年よりタバコ裁培者としてRobaina Familyは、サンルイスのタバコ生産地領域で農園を始めた。 サン・ルイス地域はブエルタ・アバホの地域の中でも最も素晴らしいタバコ畑と素晴らしいラッパー用タバコ葉を産する地域として名を馳せている。ドン・アレ ハンドロの父親であるMaruto Robainaはキューバで最も偉大なタバコ裁培者であるという評価を得ていた。 1950年に、Maruto Robainaの死後、ドン・アレハンドロは、農園を受け継いた時には、農園で生産するタバコ葉、Habanosの工場でよく使われるラッパー用のタバコ 葉を熟知しており、以来さらに農園は栄える。 ピナルデルリオ州から輸出されたタバコの約30%はVegas Robaina(Robaina Tobacco農園)のラッパーを使用しているという。生きる伝説と言われた由縁である。HUMIDOR vol.21は急遽、DON ALEJANDRO ROBAINA追悼特集号として発行することになった。

The existence of DON ALEJANDRO ROBAINA that was called a legend where it lives has really become a legend on April 17, 2010. In 1997, Habanos SA honored him by launching a new line of cigars bearing the name of his famous farmland. Vegas Robaina cigars, made in Havana at the former H. Upmann Factory, have quickly become popular among cigar aficionados.Don Alejandro Robaina, whose family of tobacco growers set up in the tobacco region of San Luis during the middle of the last century. The San Luis area has the finest tobacco plantations and wrapper tobacco of the Vuelta Abajo region. Don Alejandro’s father, Maruto Robaina, was considered the finest tobacco grower in the country. In 1950, upon the death of Maruto Robaina, Don Alejandro took charge of the plantations, which have produced and continue to produce the wrapper used to manufacture Habanos cigars. Approximately 30% of the tobacco exported from Pinar del Rio province uses Vegas Robaina (Robaina Tobacco plantation) wrapper, making the plantation a tobacco legend.HUMIDOR vol.21 will be in haste issued as DON ALEJANDRO ROBAINA mournful feature title.

THE LOST CITY

「THE LOST CITY」という映画を覚えているだろうか？アンディ・ガルシア主演で原作が「THE HOLY SMOKING」のカブレラ・インファンテという葉巻愛好家にとって魅力的な映画として特筆ものであった。
舞台はキューバであるが映画に登場する葉巻畑のロケはドミニカ共和国にあるフエンテで行われた。それも7月という葉巻の収穫期にない特別な季節であった。そう映画のためにフエンテは特別にタバコ葉を植えたのあった。あれから６年たってまさかこの時のたばこ葉が製品となって登場するとは夢にも思わなかった。
2004年に収穫されたタバコ葉は5年間の発酵と熟成期間を経て製品として2009年秋に登場したのである。限定品であり話題性には事欠かないが葉巻愛好者にとり怪訝に思うのはこの時期に収穫したたばこ葉の存在であろう。長い間の経験と知識によりタバコ葉の生産のサイクルというものが各国で一期作というカタチをとっている。何だ二期作出来るじゃないかという人もいるだろうが、あくまでもこれは余興なのである。タバコ葉の生産でもっとも大切とされるのが土壌の問題であり、土地の疲弊という問題が安定した良質の葉の生産を阻害するのである。個人としてはFuenteらしからぬ事をやったものだと唖然とした。今回の「THE LOST CITY」に関しては、折角季節外れに収穫した大切なたばこ葉を残したいというフエンテの気持ちであろうと思う。日本でも販売されるがどうやら充分な数は確保出来ていないようで，予約だけでもう入荷分が無くなったようである。販売開始日には、せめて旗艦店の店頭に並んでほしいと思うのは筆者だけだろうか。2000年以降、各ブランドで限定商品が数多くリリースされる傾向にあるが如何なものだろう？「THE LOST CITY」に関して言うならば，Fuenteは本当の意味での限定生産であると願いたい。このような話題性は今の葉巻の世界では有り難いことである。昔から数多くの映画に効果的に葉巻を燻らせる姿が登場してきた。昨今の嫌煙の波に押されながらも映画にはたびたび登場する。異なる表現能力を持ち、独特のカルチャーを形成してきた映画の世界は葉巻の存在にも欠かせない。ビジュアルとしてライフスタイルを垣間みながら、シガー・スモーキングを目の当たりにするよい機会である。そしてその格好よさに影響されて葉巻の虜になった方も多いことだろう。「THE LOST CITY」は夢ある葉巻の存在となってほしい。

Do you remember the movie of "THE LOST CITY"?It is an Andy Garcia starring and the original was the special mention one as an attractive movie for the cigar lover named Cabrera Infante of "THE HOLY SMOKING".The location of the cigar field that appeared in the movie was done with [fuente] in the Dominican Republic though the stage was Cuba. It was a special season when the cigar of July did not exist in it during harvest season either. So..movie..special..tobacco..leaf..plant..provide.I never thought that I became a product the cigarette leaf at this time and appeared of the dream after six years because of that.The tobacco leaf that had been harvested in 2004 appeared as a product about five years after fermentation and the ripe period in the autumn of 2009. It is existence of the tobacco leaf harvested at this time that thinks it takes in the cigar lover and it is suspicious though a limited edition it and not lacked the topicality. The cycle of the production of the tobacco leaves takes form of first cropping in each country by an experience of long time and knowledge. The double cropping creation and coming, this is an entertainment to the last though there might be a person whether, too. Being said it is the most important by producing the cigarette leaves is a problem of the soil, and the production of leaves that stabilize the problem of poverty of land and are good quality is obstructed. When it was the one that the thing that did not seem to be Fuente was done, it was dumbfounded as the individual. It thinks of this "THE LOST CITY" even though feelings of [fuente] to leave the harvested important tobacco leaf for the season coming off with much trouble. An apparently enough number is not ..securing.. made, and arrival of goods has already disappeared only by the reservation though it is sold also in Japan. Will it be only an author that thinks that it wants you the arrangement in the shop in the flagship shop at least at the sales start date? Will it be the one how though it tends for a lot of limited products to be released by each brand after 2000?I want to wish that Fuente is a limited production in a true meaning if "THE LOST CITY" is said. Such a topicality is welcome in the world of a cigar today. The appearance to make the cigar smoke effectively in a lot of movies has appeared for a long time. It frequently appears in the movie though it is pushed to a recent antismoking wave. It has a different expression ability, and the world of the movie that has formed peculiar culture is indispensable also for the existence of the cigar. It is a good chance to witness cigar smoking while seeing the lifestyle as visual between fences. And, the influence of seeing the movie and to the prisoner of the cigar abundant. As for "THE LOST CITY", I want you to become existence of the cigar with the dream.

カブレラ・インファンテの葉巻

葉巻の研究書と言ったら良いのだろうか。それとも映画の本と言ったら良いのだろうか。「HOLY SMOKING」でユーモアたっぷりの文で独特の世界を表現したカブレラ・インファンテ。彼がこよなく愛したキューバの葉巻ブランドと言えば「Por Larranaga」。時折燻らせているとインファンテのことを思い出してしまう。つい最近、フエンテファミリーから「TheLost City」という葉巻がリリースされると知らせがあった。映画「TheLost City」のロケ地であったフエンテの農場で実際に育てられていた葉がやっと熟成期を迎えたということだろうか。この６月に日本でも発売になる。微妙な気持ちになってしまうがさて葉巻は燻らせてみないと何ともいえない。これを機会にインファンテをお浚いすることにしよう。

映画「The Lost City」の原作者ギリェルモ・カブレラ・インファンテは、キューバの亡命作家だった。2005年2月21日にロンドンから訃報が配信された。30年以上にわたり暮らした亡命先のロンドンの病院で死去した。享年75歳だった。ギリェルモ・カブレラ・インファンテは、映画評論を手がける若手の知識人として、1959年のキューバ革命を支持していたというが、カストロ政権が共産主義色を強め、言論統制の危険性が高まったことに失望。キューバを出国し、ベルギーのキューバ大使館職員を経て、1965年に英国に亡命。その2年後、 1967年に発表した「Three Trapped Tigers」（邦題「三頭の淋しい虎」：スペインで初刊行)は革命前のハバナの華やかな夜の世界を描き出した傑作といわれ、この一作でラテンアメリカ小説家の第一線に躍り出たと評されている。この物語に基づいて映画化されたのが本作「ロスト・シティ」。カストロによるキューバ革命が起きた1959年、インファンテはすでに29歳。ハバナで映画評論などを書き、それなりに名の知れたジャーナリストだった。革命政権早々、彼は新聞の別冊週刊誌「ルネス」の編集長に据えられたが、時に革命政権を揶揄する原稿を平気で載せたため、雑誌は61年に廃刊となり、インファンテは65年、当時勤めていたベルギーのキューバ大使館から亡命し、ロンドンに居を構えた。
　以来、一環してカストロによる独裁、チェ・ゲバラら革命政権草創時の面々による、露骨な言論統制、頭の固さや融通の利かなさを批判し、それを小説作品に活かしてきた。後半生をロンドンに暮らしながらも、彼は最期までキューバにこだわり続けた。これは、やはりパリで死んだキューバ人作家アレホ・カルペンティエルにも、エイズを患いニューヨークで自殺したレイナルド･アレナスにも言えることだが、彼らは亡命後、キューバと直接関係のない作品を試みながらも、結局、キューバへ立ち戻っていく。キューバ人たちは、亡命作家というよりも「望郷作家」と呼んだ方がいいくらい、自分が生まれ育った島と向き合い、死ぬまで書き続ける。
　カブレラ・インファンテは、スペイン語文学で最も権威のあるセルバンテス賞を受賞した翌年の98年、珍しくスペインの雑誌インタビューに応じている。
「もし明日、カストロもカストロ主義も消えたら、キューバに戻りますか」
　と聞かれ、彼はこう答えている。
「よく、行進の先頭に立って帰るのかと聞かれるけど、いつもこう答えるんだ。最初の飛行機に乗って帰るつもりはない。ただ一つ言えるのは、自分はこのロンドンの家に暮らし、もう30年になるということだ。多分、住所や行き先を変えることはできるだろうけど、意識や感覚まで変えることはもうできない」自分はもう変わってしまった。30年も離れた故郷に帰ったからといって自分自身の何かが始まるわけではない。つまり、いそいそと戻ることはないと言いたかったのだろう。

キューバを離れてカブレラ・インファンテはグローバルな視点と感覚を持つようになったのである。葉巻の世界において確固たる見識を持ち、たばこ全般にわたる幅広い知識と経験に裏づけられた軽妙なウイット感溢れる文章。キューバという国で一生を過ごしたならば独特な葉巻感というものは生まれなかったはずである。ジャーナリストとしてより自由な表現が出来る自分であるためにカブレラ・インファンテはキューバに戻らなかった。1985年「HOLY SMOKING」が上辞されてから日本で訳書が登場したのは2005年彼の死後であり2006年と4半世紀も後の事であった。残念ながら今の時代に照らし合わせるとどうしてもタイムラグが生じている事は致し方ない。というのは彼が「HOLY SMOKING」を出版してから20年あまりもたち葉巻の状況が目まぐるしく変わってきているということである。名著であるが時代とともに色褪せる事実も在る。生きている間に改訂版が出ていたら面白かったと思う。

「Por Larranaga」という葉巻を死ぬ前にも燻らせているとしたらどのようなコメントを残したのだろう。そしてフエンテから日本発売された「TheLost City」に関してはどんなコメントをするのだろうか。

１９２１年Frankは亡くなりましたが、Harold Bowdenに事業は引き継がれます。Frankのリーダーシップにより、新技術も取り入れられ、またHumbeｒ、Rudge、BSA、Triumphなどの著名ブランドをRaleighグループに吸収します。ラレーはHumber Cyclesブランドも引継ぎ、業務内容をさらに拡大します。
１９３６年、前ドロヨケ先端に取り付けるランプ･ダイナモ一体型の、ダイナモランプを発売。現在見られるブロックランプの基礎を成しています。色々な自転車にもランプの取付を可能にしました。またSturmey-Archerの技術を生かした、ハブ内臓のダイナモDyno-hubを発売。現在のハブダイナモの基礎ともなっています。静かで抵抗が少なく、完全防水の画期的な発明でした。１９４３年、ラレーはRudge-Whitworth社を傘下に入れます。Rudgeは、1869年Dan Rudgeが自転車がボーンシェーカーと呼ばれるころに設立。ボーンシェーカー(骨を揺する)とは、当時は空気入りタイヤや、振動吸収の機能が自転車には全くなくて、路面の振動をもろに乗り手が受けるという意味でもありました。１９６０年、TIグループを吸収。レイノルズといったチューブだけでなく、Phillips、Hercules、Norman、Sunといったブランドもあり、ラレーは世界最大の二輪メーカーになります。
