FOREVER DON ALEJANDRO ROBAINA

2010年4月17日、生きる伝説と呼ばれたDON ALEJANDRO ROBAINAの存在が本当に伝説となってしまった。享年91歳、数年前に彼を訪ねた時にはまだまだ元気そうで100歳までも生きてくれそうな様子だった。彼を失った事はキューバの葉巻界にとってはもちろんの事、全世界の葉巻界にとっても大きな痛手となる事は間違いない。独自のたばこ理論を持ち、栽培方法を生み出し、ロバイナ農園で生産していたたばこ葉の80％は輸出葉巻のラッパーに使われていた。1997年より世に送り出された彼を冠した「VEGAS ROBAINA」という葉巻ブランドのみならず。キューバの葉巻すべてに与える影響というものが顕著に現れてくる事は明言出来る。ドン・アレハンドロはキューバのタバコ葉の産地として世界にその名を知られるブエルタ・アバホ地域で最も優れたタバコ栽培家として世界中の葉巻愛好家に名を知られていた。 毎年、ドン・アレハンドロの収穫したタバコ葉の80%はキューバ葉巻のラッパー用タバコ葉としての使用されている事が彼を著名にした。ちなみに他の農園では収穫の約35%だけが使われていた。 さらに1997年に、Habanos SAは、彼の有名な農地の名がついている葉巻のブランド・ラインを始めることによって、彼を讃えた。 ハバナの元H.アップマンFactoryで作られたVEGAS ROBAINAは、当然のように葉巻愛好家に素晴らしい葉巻として認められた。1845年よりタバコ裁培者としてRobaina Familyは、サンルイスのタバコ生産地領域で農園を始めた。 サン・ルイス地域はブエルタ・アバホの地域の中でも最も素晴らしいタバコ畑と素晴らしいラッパー用タバコ葉を産する地域として名を馳せている。ドン・アレ ハンドロの父親であるMaruto Robainaはキューバで最も偉大なタバコ裁培者であるという評価を得ていた。 1950年に、Maruto Robainaの死後、ドン・アレハンドロは、農園を受け継いた時には、農園で生産するタバコ葉、Habanosの工場でよく使われるラッパー用のタバコ 葉を熟知しており、以来さらに農園は栄える。 ピナルデルリオ州から輸出されたタバコの約30%はVegas Robaina(Robaina Tobacco農園)のラッパーを使用しているという。生きる伝説と言われた由縁である。HUMIDOR vol.21は急遽、DON ALEJANDRO ROBAINA追悼特集号として発行することになった。

The existence of DON ALEJANDRO ROBAINA that was called a legend where it lives has really become a legend on April 17, 2010. The San Luis area has the finest tobacco plantations and wrapper tobacco of the Vuelta Abajo region. Don Alejandro’s father, Maruto Robaina, was considered the finest tobacco grower in the country. In 1950, upon the death of Maruto Robaina, Don Alejandro took charge of the plantations, which have produced and continue to produce the wrapper used to manufacture Habanos cigars. Approximately 30% of the tobacco exported from Pinar del Rio province uses Vegas Robaina (Robaina Tobacco plantation) wrapper, making the plantation a tobacco legend.HUMIDOR vol.21 will be in haste issued as DON ALEJANDRO ROBAINA mournful feature title.

カブレラ・インファンテの葉巻

葉巻の研究書と言ったら良いのだろうか。それとも映画の本と言ったら良いのだろうか。「HOLY SMOKING」でユーモアたっぷりの文で独特の世界を表現したカブレラ・インファンテ。彼がこよなく愛したキューバの葉巻ブランドと言えば「Por Larranaga」。時折燻らせているとインファンテのことを思い出してしまう。つい最近、フエンテファミリーから「TheLost City」という葉巻がリリースされると知らせがあった。映画「TheLost City」のロケ地であったフエンテの農場で実際に育てられていた葉がやっと熟成期を迎えたということだろうか。この６月に日本でも発売になる。微妙な気持ちになってしまうがさて葉巻は燻らせてみないと何ともいえない。これを機会にインファンテをお浚いすることにしよう。

映画「The Lost City」の原作者ギリェルモ・カブレラ・インファンテは、キューバの亡命作家だった。2005年2月21日にロンドンから訃報が配信された。30年以上にわたり暮らした亡命先のロンドンの病院で死去した。享年75歳だった。ギリェルモ・カブレラ・インファンテは、映画評論を手がける若手の知識人として、1959年のキューバ革命を支持していたというが、カストロ政権が共産主義色を強め、言論統制の危険性が高まったことに失望。キューバを出国し、ベルギーのキューバ大使館職員を経て、1965年に英国に亡命。その2年後、 1967年に発表した「Three Trapped Tigers」（邦題「三頭の淋しい虎」：スペインで初刊行)は革命前のハバナの華やかな夜の世界を描き出した傑作といわれ、この一作でラテンアメリカ小説家の第一線に躍り出たと評されている。この物語に基づいて映画化されたのが本作「ロスト・シティ」。カストロによるキューバ革命が起きた1959年、インファンテはすでに29歳。ハバナで映画評論などを書き、それなりに名の知れたジャーナリストだった。革命政権早々、彼は新聞の別冊週刊誌「ルネス」の編集長に据えられたが、時に革命政権を揶揄する原稿を平気で載せたため、雑誌は61年に廃刊となり、インファンテは65年、当時勤めていたベルギーのキューバ大使館から亡命し、ロンドンに居を構えた。
　以来、一環してカストロによる独裁、チェ・ゲバラら革命政権草創時の面々による、露骨な言論統制、頭の固さや融通の利かなさを批判し、それを小説作品に活かしてきた。後半生をロンドンに暮らしながらも、彼は最期までキューバにこだわり続けた。これは、やはりパリで死んだキューバ人作家アレホ・カルペンティエルにも、エイズを患いニューヨークで自殺したレイナルド･アレナスにも言えることだが、彼らは亡命後、キューバと直接関係のない作品を試みながらも、結局、キューバへ立ち戻っていく。キューバ人たちは、亡命作家というよりも「望郷作家」と呼んだ方がいいくらい、自分が生まれ育った島と向き合い、死ぬまで書き続ける。
　カブレラ・インファンテは、スペイン語文学で最も権威のあるセルバンテス賞を受賞した翌年の98年、珍しくスペインの雑誌インタビューに応じている。
「もし明日、カストロもカストロ主義も消えたら、キューバに戻りますか」
　と聞かれ、彼はこう答えている。
「よく、行進の先頭に立って帰るのかと聞かれるけど、いつもこう答えるんだ。最初の飛行機に乗って帰るつもりはない。ただ一つ言えるのは、自分はこのロンドンの家に暮らし、もう30年になるということだ。多分、住所や行き先を変えることはできるだろうけど、意識や感覚まで変えることはもうできない」自分はもう変わってしまった。30年も離れた故郷に帰ったからといって自分自身の何かが始まるわけではない。つまり、いそいそと戻ることはないと言いたかったのだろう。

キューバを離れてカブレラ・インファンテはグローバルな視点と感覚を持つようになったのである。葉巻の世界において確固たる見識を持ち、たばこ全般にわたる幅広い知識と経験に裏づけられた軽妙なウイット感溢れる文章。キューバという国で一生を過ごしたならば独特な葉巻感というものは生まれなかったはずである。ジャーナリストとしてより自由な表現が出来る自分であるためにカブレラ・インファンテはキューバに戻らなかった。1985年「HOLY SMOKING」が上辞されてから日本で訳書が登場したのは2005年彼の死後であり2006年と4半世紀も後の事であった。残念ながら今の時代に照らし合わせるとどうしてもタイムラグが生じている事は致し方ない。というのは彼が「HOLY SMOKING」を出版してから20年あまりもたち葉巻の状況が目まぐるしく変わってきているということである。名著であるが時代とともに色褪せる事実も在る。生きている間に改訂版が出ていたら面白かったと思う。

「Por Larranaga」という葉巻を死ぬ前にも燻らせているとしたらどのようなコメントを残したのだろう。そしてフエンテから日本発売された「TheLost City」に関してはどんなコメントをするのだろうか。

It cannot be indescribably said that the cigar will not allow them to smoke though it is slight feelings.

It left Cuba and Cabrera Infante came to have a global aspect and the sense. It has firm discernment in the world of the cigar, and proven witty sentences to wide knowledge and the experience over the cigarette whole with which the wit feeling overflows. A peculiar cigar feeling should not have arisen if the life was spent in the country named Cuba. Cabrera Infante did not return to Cuba because it was me who was able to do a freer expression as a journalist. "HOLY SMOKING" was postmortem in 2005 of him that the translation appeared in Japan after it had been left in the above and the following thing in 1985 for 2006 and as many as 4 half a century. The thing that the time lag is caused by all means when comparing it to our regret in an age today is hopeless. Because the situation of the departure cigar has been changing bewilderingly too much for 20 years after he publishes "HOLY SMOKING". It is a fine book and there is a fact that fades away in the age, too. I think it is interesting when the revised edition comes out while it is alive.

It will know Infante again on this occasion.If he was having the cigar of "Por Larranaga" smoke immediately before dying, what comment might have been left. And, what comment does he leave for "TheLost City" to which Japan is put on the market from Fuente?
